Mygate Introduces Safe Carpooling for Residential Communities

As governments across India increasingly encourage shared mobility to reduce congestion, fuel consumption and emissions, Mygate, India’s leading community management platform, has introduced a new carpooling feature that enables residents to discover and coordinate shared rides with neighbours travelling along similar routes.

The launch comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging citizens to reduce fuel consumption through simple behavioural changes, including shared mobility. By enabling residents to carpool with people within their own residential communities, Mygate aims to support this broader effort while making shared commuting more accessible and practical.

The potential impact of community-led carpooling can be significant. With just 20% of Mygate’s 5.7 million residents signing up for Carpool, approximately 18.2 crore litres of fuel could be saved annually*. At current Bengaluru petrol prices, this represents potential fuel savings of approximately ₹2,020 crore a year, or around ₹17,700 per participating resident annually.

Unlike conventional carpooling platforms that connect strangers, Mygate enables ride-sharing exclusively among residents within the same community, providing a trusted and familiar environment for shared travel.

Mygate’s Carpool allows residents to create and discover shared rides based on their daily commute preferences. Residents can set up recurring rides, add their destination, specify the number of available seats, and include a customised message to share relevant details such as the car model, preferred pickup point, or any other information for fellow residents.

The feature was initially rolled out across 50 communities, where it recorded over 4000 users engaging actively in the 15-day pilot period. Early feedback indicated strong resident interest in community-led shared mobility, with users citing convenience, familiarity with fellow residents, and the ability to reduce commuting costs as key benefits. The insights from the pilot have informed the feature’s wider rollout across the Mygate platform.

In addition to its potential mobility and environmental benefits, the feature is intended to facilitate greater interaction among residents. Shared commutes can enable residents to connect with neighbours who have similar travel routes, work locations or daily schedules, thereby strengthening social connections within communities.
