Uber launches ‘Public Transport’ in second Indian city, Hyderabad

Uber announced the launch of its Public Transport feature in Hyderabad, in partnership with the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) and L&T Metro, making it the second Indian city where riders will be able to plan their transit journey with real-time information and end-to-end directions, all within the Uber app.

After successfully launching Public Transport in association with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in October 2019, Uber’s current association with HMRL and L&T Metro will allow riders to plan their commute by reviewing HMRL and Telangana State Road Transport Corporations’ (TSRTC) bus service information.

Uber’s ‘Public Transport’ journey planning feature gives riders a seamless way to view detailed information like the fastest and cheapest routes, real-time schedules, arrival and departure times, estimated price and walking directions to nearby transit stops to make the smartest possible journey choices. Users will also have the option of customizing their journey by opting for ridesharing modes to help with first/last mile connectivity.

The launch of Public Transport in Hyderabad is yet another sign of Uber’s commitment to India and to tens of millions of riders who rely on Uber’s innovative mobility solutions. By leveraging its global technology expertise to integrate mass-transit systems and ridesharing, Uber hopes to provide an end-to-end journey experience at the touch of a button, expand affordable transportation to all Indians and build smart cities of the future.

Commenting on the launch, Prabhjeet Singh, President, Uber India and South Asia, said, “Following our successful partnership with DMRC, we’re thrilled to partner with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to launch our ‘Public Transport’ journey planning feature for powering smart mobility in Hyderabad. We believe the future of urban transportation is all about the seamless integration of public transit systems and shared mobility solutions. This enables efficient commute options, saves riders time and money, improves the city’s productivity and helps build smarter and more sustainable cities.”

Talking about the launch, Mr NVS Reddy, Managing Director, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Uber to offer innovative solutions like the public transport journey planning feature which will help Hyderabad residents plan their travel efficiently and seamlessly. Uber’s world class technology can help riders optimise their time by providing all available transport options on the Uber app, and in turn allow us to better serve Hyderabad’s travel needs. We need to harness the power of public-private partnerships to improve transport infrastructure and help provide smart and efficient urban mobility in the city.”

Speaking about the partnership, Mr. KVB Reddy, MD & CEO, L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited, said, “As we resume metro services in a graded manner across the city, our partnership with Uber will be instrumental in helping riders plan their everyday commute better with the new public transport journey planning service. We recognize that public transport and Uber can be a powerful combination as riders will have information on metro and bus service schedules to make smart choices, along with options to complete the first and last mile of their journey. We hope with this new initiative people who wouldn’t regularly consider public transport will realize how easy and affordable it can be.”

Since 2019, Uber Transit Journey Planning has been introduced in more than 15 cities around the world in partnership with leading transit operators including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in India to integrate the city’s Metro and public bus service and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the United States.
